Scope and Content The Canongate Tolbooth, Canongate, Edinburgh The Canongate was formerly a separate burgh and the Tolbooth formed its civic centre. It is a three-storeyed building with an adjoining tower which is, in the order of the day, fortified. The building was restored in 1879, when the clock was added. The Tolbooth acted as the collection centre for local taxes. In addition it housed the council chamber, courthouse, and the local police. For a brief while in the 19th century it also served as a jailhouse, taking overflow prisoners from Calton Jail. The Canongate Tolbooth today houses a popular museum, 'The People's Story', which uses reconstruction to present the story of the inhabitants of Edinburgh through first-hand evidence, using oral history and written accounts.
