Scope and Content John Knox House, High Street, Edinburgh The connections of John Knox's House with the great religious reformer are tenuous, but it is an interesting building because of the survival of the original timber front. At the time of this photo it was in disrepair, but it was restored shortly after. John Knox House reflects the wealth of this part of the city in the 16th century. The building has many fine details both inside and out. It bears the initials of James Mossman to whom it belonged in 1556. He was a goldsmith to Mary Queen of Scots. Originally the city houses were stone-fronted, but in the 16th century wooden extensions were permitted to encourage people to buy timber from the newly-cleared Borough Muir. This resulted in a reduction of the High Street by over 4m in width. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
