Scope and Content Fleshmarket Close, High Street, Edinburgh Fleshmarket Close owes its name to a meat market held here, and led down to a slaughterhouse on the edge of the Nor' Loch. Prior to this it was known as Provost's Close after David Aikenhead, who lived here in the 17th century and was Provost of the city. In common with other Old Town closes the fortunes of Fleshmarket Close have varied. At one time it was lived in by Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville, though later on it was home to humbler tradesmen and their families. Fleshmarket Close was divided in 1860, when Cockburn Street was built. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
