Scope and Content 19th-century drawing of Advocate's Close, High Street, Edinburgh Advocate's Close, so narrow 'that there is hardly space for fresh air', dates from the 16th century. It led off the High Street down to the Nor' Loch and could be closed at night by a gate. The timber-fronted houses, with each floor built out beyond the floor below to make best use of limited available space, were typical of many in the Old Town. The pointed gables, attics and doorways are also characteristic of Old Town architecture. Advocate's Close, named Cant's, Clement Cor's and then Stewart's Close, was named after Sir James Stewart of Goodtrees who was Lord Advocate from 1692-1713. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
