Scope and Content Tailors' Hall, Cowgate, Edinburgh The Tailors' Hall was built in the Cowgate in the early 17th century. At this time the Cowgate was a fashionable street inhabited by wealthy citizens. There were fine houses and it boasted its own wells to ensure that there was good quality fresh water. The Tailors' Hall was the centre of the Incorporation of Tailors, and it reflected the wealth and power of the old City Guilds. It formed the south side of an enclosed square and had a fine street frontage, now sadly demolished. The Tailors' Hall has seen several changes of use, for example as a brewery, and during this time it has been considerably altered. Some of the original details have, however, survived.
