Scope and Content Magdalen Chapel, Cowgate, Edinburgh The Magdalen Chapel was founded in the Cowgate in 1541. At this time the Cowgate was a fashionable street inhabited by wealthy citizens. There were fine houses and it boasted its own wells to ensure that there was good quality fresh water. Though the Cowgate is no longer as fashionable today, the interior of the chapel reflects its origin. There is fine Jacobean-style arcaded wooden panelling. The ceiling is a simple barrel vault, and there is good quality ironwork. The windows of the Magdalen Chapel are well-known as the only examples of stained glass from the pre-Reformation period to have survived in their original setting. In 1621, a tower was added. The Chapel today serves Heriot-Watt University. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
