Scope and Content Tombstone of Janet Rhynd, the Magdalen Chapel, Cowgate, Edinburgh The Magdalen Chapel, a 16th-century almshouse chapel, was founded by Michael Macqueen, a burgess of Edinburgh, and his wife, Janet Rhynd. It was taken over in 1553 by the Incorporation of Hammermen, a medieval trade corporation. The tomb of Janet Rhynd, who died in 1553, lies in the south-east corner of the chapel. It has a central shield bearing her coat of arms and that of her husband, flanked by their initials 'MM' and 'IR', and has a marginal inscription in Gothic lettering. The chapel, dedicated to Mary Magdalen, originally housed a chaplain and seven poor men who were intended to devote their lives to prayer. They were to include in their prayers Mary Queen of Scots, and the two founders and their family. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
