Scope and Content Palace, Edinburgh Castle The Palace lies at the heart of Edinburgh Castle. It has been much altered over the years, but the basis of the present building was laid down by James IV, grandfather of Mary Queen of Scots. James IV developed a fine Renaissance Palace out of the Great Chamber, built in the 15th century. This building was then remodelled in the early 17th century for the return from England of Mary's son, James VI. Mary Queen of Scots chose the Royal Apartments for the birth of her son James. Here rooms were furnished and a bed, hung with blue velvet and blue taffeta, was brought in. The birth was celebrated with a royal salute and 500 bonfires. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
