Scope and Content Edinburgh from the Radical Road, Holyrood Park The path round the foot of Salisbury Crags in Holyrood Park was built in the 1820s. It was designed as a route for pleasure and inspiration and gives wonderful views over the city skyline. Sir Walter Scott was among those who planned the project. The building of the path took place as a scheme to employ unemployed weavers from the west of Scotland. Their radical politics led to the naming of the route and it quickly became a popular walkway, as it is today. In the distance may be seen the familiar outline of Edinburgh Castle, perched on the Castle Rock. Like Salisbury Crags, the Castle Rock is the result of volcanic action long ago.
