Scope and Content Charlotte Square, Edinburgh No 6, at the centre of the north side Charlotte Square, designed by Robert Adam in 1791, the year before he died, is the crowning achievement of his many works of domestic architecture, and one of the most beautiful large residential squares in Europe. The large pediment above the four Corinthian columns is decorated with festoons, balustrades and circular panels. The frieze is interrupted by a plain panel at the very centre. Statues were meant to stand on the pediment. No 6, built in 1798, was sold to Sir John Sinclair in 1806. In 1966, after the death of the fifth Marquis Bute, who had lived at No 5, it was given the name Bute House and established as the official residence of the Secretary of State for Scotland.
