Scope and Content St Andrew and St George, George Street, Edinburgh at the time of the 'Disruption' in 1843 Plan of St Andrew's Church, as it then was St Andrew's Church was built in George Street in 1782-4 following the loss of its intended site in St Andrew Square. This shallow space suited the oval, or strictly elliptical, church of which this seems to be the first important example in Britain. This is the plan of the church at the meeting of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland on 18th May 1843. The Moderator sat in front, behind the communion table, and the ministers of the Church occupied the pews. The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland meets annually in Edinburgh. In 1843, 470 ministers, angry at the appointment of ministers by patronage, walked out, led by Dr Thomas Chalmers, and eventually formed their own Free Church of Scotland.
