Scope and Content Standard Life Assurance Building, 3-13 George Street, Edinburgh The Standard Life Assurance Building occupies a commanding position at the north east corner of George Street and St Andrew Square. It was built gradually in three stages from 1897 to 1901 as the original buildings on the corner site were demolished. The large central pediment, designed for a 1839 building by David Bryce, has sculpture by Sir John Steell representing the parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins. The date (1825) in Roman numerals on the frieze is the date of the founding of the company. Sir John Steell's sculpture depicts the parable from the Bible of the 10 virgins. Here, the five wise ones represent policyholders who had insured themselves, and the five foolish ones represent those who were non-assured. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
