Scope and Content Royal Bank of Scotland Building, 14 George Street, Edinburgh The former Royal Bank of Scotland Building, originally the head office of the Commercial Bank, was designed by David Rhind, and opened in 1847. It stands on the site of James Craig's Physicians' Hall of 1776. The frontage, based on Playfair's original scheme for the Surgeons' Hall, Nicholson Street, has a huge Corinthian portico entered directly from the street. The pedimental sculpture was modelled by James Wyatt of London. The Physicians' Hall by James Craig was demolished in 1843 to make way for a building 'on the largest possible scale' for the headquarters of the Commercial Bank which had twice outgrown its premises, first in Picardy Place and then in the High Street.
