Scope and Content George Hotel, Nos 19-21 George Street, Edinburgh The George Hotel grew from three plain houses built on the site by John Young in the early 1780s. After various remodellings that provided hotel accommodation, the whole building became a hotel in 1935. No 21, in the middle, shows the plain frontage of the original George Street house. No 19, on the right, originally three houses, had a Corinthian portico added for the offices of the Caledonian Insurance Company. Both buildings now form the George Hotel. By the late 18th century a number of hotels in the New Town offered elegant apartments, furnished to the standards of the best hotels in London. Here 'strangers of any rank may find accommodation suited to their wishes; and that upon reasonable terms'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
