Scope and Content Threshing mill, Breck of Rendall, Orkney This water-powered threshing mill was part of what was probably Orkney-s largest farm steading. Though obviously out of use for many years, it was still substantially intact in 1976. This view shows the exterior of the mill, which is the section of the steading with the crow-stepped gables, on the left. The waterwheel driving the mill was behind and below the wall in front of the gable on the left. Below-ground wheels driving threshing machines were uncommon in Scotland, and this was probably the only Orcadian example. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
