Scope and Content Barony Mills, Birsay, Orkney This is a group of three water-powered mills, consisting of the old and new corn mills and Boardhouse Threshing Mill. This concentration of water-powered sites is unique in Orkney, and very rare elsewhere. This view shows the mills from the north, with the 'new' corn mill on the left, the 'old' corn mill in the middle, and Boardhouse Threshing Mill on the right. The waterwheels driving the old corn mill and the threshing mill are between the two buildings. The 'new' mill was still being used commercially in 1976, and did not close until the mid 1990s. Since then it has been taken over by a trust, adapted for safe public access, and is now open to the public. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
