Scope and Content Tormiston Mill, Stenness, Orkney This is a large three-storey, water-powered corn mill, rubble-built, on a rectangular plan, with two pairs of stones driven by an overshot wheel 1.22 by 4.27m, with the lade carried on a flagstone-built aqueduct. This view shows the waterwheel, with a cast iron frame and wooden buckets, and the aqueduct carrying the lade. Many of the Orkney and Caithness mills, like Tormiston, were rebuilt in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Since 1976 the mill has been acquired by Historic Scotland, and it is now operated as a visitor centre for Maes Howe chambered cairn. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
