Scope and Content Login's Well, Stromness, Orkney This well, on the main street of Stromness, was used as a water supply for the town, and also for watering ships using the excellent natural harbour. This view shows the entrance to the well, which was closed up in 1931, with a plaque recording some of its users, who included vessels of the Hudson's Bay Company, Captain Cook's ships, and those of Sir John Franklin. Since 1976 the wooden door seen here has been replace by a glass screen so that visitors can see into the well. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
