Scope and Content Private quays, Stromness, Orkney Stromness is the ferry-port of Orkney, and has a long history of trade, for many years being almost entirely a merchant community, with private warehouses lining the shore. Many of these had their own piers and quays. This view shows the Stromness waterfront from the south, with private quays and piers extending to the Northern Lighthouse Board's pier, with one of the Board's tenders. This vessel serviced the Board's lights and buoys in the north. Though long disused for commerce, many of the private port facilities retain much of their original character, including hand cranes.
