Scope and Content 'New' Mill, Barony Mills, Birsay, Orkney This is a water-powered corn mill, rubble-built, on a rectangular plan, driven by an overshot waterwheel about 4.3m in diameter. It is one of a group of three mills, with the old corn mill and Boardhouse Threshing Mill. This view shows the overshot wheel with its launder. The lade was running, with the water going to waste, as the mill was not working. It was however still in commercial operation in 1976. The mill has now been taken over by a trust, and suitable measures adopted to allow safe public access. It was the last Orkney mill in commercial operation, and produced among other products bere meal, used in making bere bannocks, an Orkney delicacy. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
