Description Kirkwall, 22 Harbour Street, The Girnal House and 20 Harbour Street, The Girnal-Keeper's House View from WNW showing N front of keeper's house, N front and W front of girnal

Date 30/4/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 459554

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Girnel, Kirkwall, Orkney This was built as a warehouse built to store rents, paid in grain, before shipment to market. This appears to have been a common practice in the 17th century in north and east Scotland. This view shows the building from the north west. The size of the building is an indication of the scale of grain growing on the island at that time. Note the external stairs; the one on the gable is probably a modern addition. The building is now known as Girnell House, and used by the Orkney Sailing Club. It is the largest of the Orkney rent houses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
