Description Mill of Ireland View from WSW showing auxiliary buildings and W front of S wing

Date 30/4/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 459543

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Mill of Ireland, Stenness, Orkney This was a large three-storey, water-powered corn mill, rubble-built, on an L-plan, driven by a large overshot wheel with a long launder taking the water to it. By 1976 it had been converted into a dwelling house, retaining the wheel. This view shows the mill from the south west. The waterwheel is on the gable on the right. The conversion to a house has respected the character of the building. This is like many other Orkney mills, probably a rebuilding of an earlier mill. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
