Scope and Content Hand crane on private quay, Sutherland's Pier, Stromness, Orkney Stromness is the ferry-port of Orkney, and has a long history of trade, for many years being almost entirely a merchant community, with private warehouses lining the shore. Many of these had their own piers and quays, some with hand cranes. This view shows one of the hand cranes, on a private quay. This is typical in scale, but not in detail of these devices. This one is a light post-crane, swivelling round a post sunk into the quay, with a wrought-iron jib. The private quays with their cranes give the Stromness quays a unique character.
