Description Tormiston Mill View from W showing SW front and NW front

Date 30/4/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 459526

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Tormiston Mill, Stenness, Orkney This is a large three-storey, water-powered corn mill, rubble-built, on a rectangular plan, with two pairs of stones driven by an overshot wheel 1.22 by 4.27m, with the lade carried on a flagstone-built aqueduct. This view shows the mill from the north west, with the kiln on the left, and the waterwheel on the gable on the right. By 1976 the mill had been converted into a restaurant and craft shop, retaining the stones and gearing. Many of the Orkney and Caithness mills, like Tormiston, were rebuilt in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Since 1976 the mill has been acquired by Historic Scotland, and it is now operated as a visitor centre for Maes Howe chambered cairn. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
