Scope and Content Storehouses, St Margaret's Hope, South Ronaldsay, Orkney Until World War II South Ronaldsay was an island, and St Margaret's Hope its port. These storehouses, beside the town's ramped pier were built by local merchants for the island's trade. This view shows the warehouses with their gable ends to Front Street. St Margaret's Hope resembles Stromness in the character of its waterfront, though smaller in scale. After the construction of the Churchill Barriers the town of St Margaret's Hope lost its position as the all-purpose focal point for South Ronaldsay, though it is still the only large settlement.
