Description St Margaret's Hope, Jetty View from W showing WNW front of jetty and WNW front of warehouses

Date 30/4/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 459476

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Jetty, St Margaret's Hope, South Ronaldsay, Orkney This is a typical ramped pier of the earlier 19th century. Until World War II South Ronaldsay was an island, and St Margaret's Hope its port., and this appears to have been the town's main pier until the late 19th century. This view shows the pier from the south west, with warehouses beyond. St Margaret's Hope resembles Stromness in the character of its waterfront, though smaller in scale. This pier and other small private piers and quays in the town were superseded by a new deep-water pier, capable of accommodating deeper-draughted vessels, which was built in the late 19th century.
