Scope and Content Tankerness Mill, Orkney This is a water-powered corn mill on a T-plan, with three pairs of stones driven by a high-breast wheel about 4.3m in diameter. The wheel is in a house, now roofless, which is said to have been built to prevent the movement of the wheel frightening horses This view shows the mill from the waterwheel end. The nearness of the wheel to the road is evident, as is the difference in the construction of the wheelhouse above and below wheel axle level. The outline of the wheelhouse roof is on the mill gable. The mill was out of use by 1976. At some time it had been converted for belt drive from a tractor, with an external pulley. In 1998 it was still disused, with the kiln roof collapsing.
