Craig Mill Detail of millstones

SC 458967

Description Craig Mill Detail of millstones

Date 18/3/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 458967

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Craig (Millhouse) Mill, Lanarkshire This was a water-powered corn mill, on an L-plan, which had been driven by an overshot wheel about 4.3m diameter, and by a horizontally-mounted water turbine. These were supplied with water from a masonry dam by a wooden launder. This view shows the survivor of the two pairs of millstones with which the mill was originally fitted. The curved feature to the right is a stone crane, used for lifting the top stone of the pair so that the grinding surfaces of the stones could be recut. Since 1976 the mill has been converted into a dwelling house, retaining the wheel and some of the machinery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
