New Lanark, New Buildings Detail of bellcote above entrance, from NE

SC 458855

Description New Lanark, New Buildings Detail of bellcote above entrance, from NE

Date 1/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 458855

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Bellcote, New Buildings, New Lanark, Lanarkshire This bellcote, which contains a bell originally intended for a church in Maryland, was originally on the stair tower off number one mill, but was moved to New Buildings, perhaps because the bell could be better heard from there. This view shows the bellcote from the back of New Buildings, before restoration of this block. Legend has it that David Dale and Richard Arkwright fell out about the position of the bell on number one mill. This is plausible, for Arkwright seems to have favoured placing the bell on the end gable of the mill. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
