Catalogue Number SC 458785

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Aerial view of Dumbreck Colliery, Kilsyth, Strathclyde This oblique aerial photograph of a coal mine with gas production plants at Dumbreck Colliery was taken during World War II by the Royal Air Force. Many aspects of a modern coal mine can be seen here. Coal was a vital war industry and many of the by-products such as gas production and brick-making proved essential to the war effort. Oblique air photographs were taken by the RAF No 1 CAM (camouflage) unit to check the effectiveness of camouflage on industrial structures such as coal mines, shipyards, electricity generating stations and engineering works when viewed from the air.
