Scope and Content General view of Inveraray from the end of the pier, Argyll and Bute Robert Mylne (1734-1811) was the architect responsible for much of the design of Inveraray. In 1774 he sketched the town front, unifying the gaps between the main street, the avenue and Dalmally Road with an arcaded screen-wall. The quay, which is set close to the town front of Inveraray, designed by John Adam (1721-92) and finished in 1762, provided berths for two small vessels. In 1795 the 5th Duke ordered estimates for the extension of the pier. There was once a herring fleet of 500 local boats and at least 100 others. Large cargo boats could not enter the harbour and had to unload their supplies onto small rowing boats. In 1805 the pier was repaired and extended by William Johns, a mason.
