Scope and Content Aerial view of Inveraray, Argyll and Bute Archibald, 3rd Duke of Argyll, who succeeded to the title in 1743, was responsible for replacing the 15th-century Inveraray Castle with the present castle. He also initiated the removal of the town of Inveraray half a mile south to a new site. This promontory, a mile from the castle, was seen by the duke as an ideal site for the new town as the headland would not interfere with agricultural activities. A beech avenue was planted to form a barrier between the estate and the town. Although there were no examples of planned towns in Scotland at that time, Archibald had seen building plans on a larger scale in London and Bath. With his designs for Inveraray and Campbeltown, he became the father of the planned town in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
