Inveraray Castle Estate, Salmon Draught Cottage View from North East

SC 458441

Description Inveraray Castle Estate, Salmon Draught Cottage View from North East

Catalogue Number SC 458441

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of B 490 CT

Scope and Content View of Salmon Draught Cottage from the north-east, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute This cottage, which is still occupied by estate fishermen, is situated on the north-west shore of Loch Shira. This cottage does not appear on 18th-century estate maps and it is likely that it was built by Dugald McKellar in 1799. The two segmental-arched openings provide access to unvaulted cellars, the largest of which was the fish-cellar, used for grading and inspecting the salmon. The other was a byre but is now used as a henhouse. There is a timber boatshed and store situated nearer the shore. The jetty is also built of timber, and extends 20m beyond low water mark. There is also a net-drying frame in the same area. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
