Scope and Content East face of MacMillan's Cross in the chapel at Kilmory Knap, Argyll and Bute In 1934 the chapel at Kilmory Knap was restored and roofed with glass by the Office of Works. It now houses Early Christian and medieval stones from the chapel and churchyard, including this cross which stood in the graveyard until 1981. On this face the cross-head is filled with twisted stems surrounding a small animal biting its own tail. The shaft depicts a deer-hunt with a stag being attacked by two dogs wearing collars. Below, there is a huntsman wielding an axe. According to an inscription on the panel at the base, the cross was made for Alexander MacMillan, who was probably the keeper of Castle Sween for the Lord of the Isles before 1481. The cross is a product of the Loch Sween school of stone carving. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
