Description Kilmory, Chapel View of chapel from North East

Catalogue Number SC 458423

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of AG 5584

Scope and Content View of the chapel at Kilmory Knap from the north-east, Argyll and Bute This medieval chapel is situated on a terrace above a small stream, 0.6km north-east of Kilmory Bay at the east side of the mouth of Loch Sween. The existing rectangular churchyard wall is of 19th-century date. To the right is MacMillan's Cross. The east gable of the chapel is reduced almost to wallhead level, while the west gable wall is complete. The two round-headed windows, which have sandstone dressings for their inner and outer surrounds, would have lit the east end of the chapel. The chapel was probably built in the early 13th century. It is mentioned as a dependency of the parish church of Knapdale at Keills, in the second half of the 13th century, the revenues of both being granted to Kilwinning Abbey.
