Scope and Content Detail of entrance to dovecot at Carloonan, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute This circular dovecot was one of the first two buildings to be built in the policies of the 3rd Duke. Roger Morris (1695-1749) designed it in 1747 and it was completed in 1748 by the mason, William Douglas (b.1736) at a cost of £53. This doorway was designed as a 'rustick door' by Morris. It has alternate long-and-short rybats (dressed stones at the edges of an opening). The lintel above the door imitates the outline of the keystone and flanking voussoirs of an arch. The doorway gives access to a room vaulted with a shallow dome, which used to have a fireplace. The dovecot itself is on the first floor and above and is lined with 410 slab-built nesting-boxes.
