Scope and Content View of Garron Bridge from the south-west, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute In 1744 a military road was planned from Inveraray to Dumbarton. Although it was an army project the 3rd Duke of Argyll's architect, Roger Morris, designed the bridge which had to cross the Garron Water. The Garron marked a boundary of the Duke's land. This bridge by Morris (1695-1749), in a Classical style, was finished in 1749. It has rectangular piers abutting the bases of the arch. The piers stand on ashlar plinths and have ashlar corner stones, or quoins. Above plain broad bands, the piers are surmounted by the parapets of rectangular refuges, where foot-travellers could stand aside from the traffic. It was closed to vehicular traffic in 1980, and the new bridge can be seen through the arch. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
