Scope and Content View of Garron Bridge from the south-east, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute Archibald, 3rd Duke of Argyll, who succeeded to the title in 1743, was responsible for replacing the 15th-century Inveraray Castle with the present castle. He also initiated the removal of the town of Inveraray half a mile south to a new site. In 1744 there were two important issues for Archibald: the founding of his new castle and the making of the military road from Dumbarton. The road was a military operation but the Duke was very interested as it would make it easier to reach Inveraray. The Duke also wanted to be sure of the road's line of approach to his parks. The road required a bridge over the Garron Water in Glen Shira, and because this lay within the Duke's policies the design was provided by his architect. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
