Scope and Content Detail of cross-loop on Dubh Loch Bridge, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute This bridge, which gives access to the east side of Glen Shira, had its specifications drawn up in 1783 by Robert Mylne (1733-1814). An estimate of £312 10s was accepted from John Tavish, mason, with his guarantee to maintain the bridge for seven years. The Dubh Loch Bridge was one of only two designs by Mylne in a Gothic style. The refuges were battlemented towers and the medieval theme was continued, with carved cross-shaped loopholes in the main parapets. The loopholes would have been more clearly visible when the bridge was new. Mylne had ordered their background to be blackened, but this has worn off. The lower arm of each cross is rounded, and the others have expanded ends. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
