Scope and Content Engraving of elevation and plan of Maam Steading, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute John, 5th Duke of Argyll (1723-1806), encouraged advanced farming methods on his estate at Inveraray. Designed by Robert Mylne (1733-1814) and built by John Tavish, Maam Steading was the last stage in the Duke's experimental farms. The façades of the side wings, harled in an off-white, can be seen with their castellated parapets. The façades were designed to be temporary and would have been removed if the full circle of buildings had been built, as planned by Mylne. The sheds incorporated timber pinnacles and other Gothick ornaments which do not survive. Mylne wanted the effect of 'a Gothick open arcade and towers, the idea taken from Holland House or a convent with cloisters'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
