Scope and Content Interior of west wing at Maam Steading, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute John, 5th Duke of Argyll (1723-1806), was interested in agriculture and science and encouraged advanced farming methods on his estate at Inveraray. Designed by Robert Mylne (1733-1814) Maam Steading was the last stage in the Duke's experimental farms. The side wings had inner and outer walls. There were cow-sheds in the inner ring and 'open sheds' in the outer ring, with drying lofts above. The inner and outer walls, in both wings, were formed by masonry piers flanking seven open bays. The bays were originally divided by horizontal beams at a height of 2.8m, which supported Gothic arches of timber, probably louvred for ventilation and hinged for loading purposes. These beams have been replaced with cast-iron lintels. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
