Scope and Content Engraving dated 1818 showing Temple Wood, Argyll and Bute Temple Wood is one of a number of impressive prehistoric monuments situated in the Kilmartin Valley, the densest concentration of prehistoric monuments in Mid-Argyll. Built for burial and ritual purposes, these served as a focus for the community. Daniell's engraving of 1818 shows the stones at Temple Wood. In the background are the standing stones at Nether Largie and the Nether Largie South cairn. Temple Wood was excavated between 1974 and 1979 by J G Scott. Within the previously recorded main circle Scott found a number of burials. In his final season he uncovered a smaller and earlier circle to the north-east. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
