Scope and Content View from north-east showing tower on Dùn Na Cuaiche, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute This tower, on the rocky crag of Dùn na Cuaiche, was one of the first ornamental buildings commissioned by the 3rd Duke of Argyll and designed by Roger Morris (1695-1749). It was built by the mason William Douglas (d.1782) in 1747-8. From the tower at the top of the hill, there are magnificent views of Inveraray Castle and Inveraray itself. Shortly after being built, the tower, 'in Imitation of a Ruin', became a goal for visitors who came up the hill by horse and, later, by carriage. Archibald, 3rd Duke of Argyll, who succeeded to the title in 1743, was responsible for replacing the 15th-century Inveraray Castle with the present castle. He also initiated the removal of the town of Inveraray half a mile south to a new site. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
