Catalogue Number SC 457805

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of B 19122 CN

Scope and Content View from east shore of Loch Fyne showing tower on Dùn Na Cuaiche, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute Archibald, 3rd Duke of Argyll, who succeeded to the title in 1743, was responsible for replacing the 15th-century Inveraray Castle with the present castle. He also initiated the removal of the town of Inveraray half a mile south to a new site. This tower, on the rocky crag of Dùn na Cuaiche, was one of the first ornamental buildings commissioned by the 3rd Duke of Argyll and designed by Roger Morris (1695-1749). It was built by the mason William Douglas (d.1782) in 1747-8. A road was built at the same time on the north slope of the hill to allow the transport of building materials and for the convenience of visitors. The tower, silhouetted against the sky, soon became the climax of any tour of the estate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
