SC 457800

Description Inveraray Castle, Cross View of front of cross in grounds of Inveraray Castle

Catalogue Number SC 457800

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of AG 8692

Scope and Content Front face of cross at Inveraray Castle, Argyll and Bute The head and most of the shaft of this disc-headed cross were removed from the burial-ground at Kirkapoll, Tiree, in the 19th century and re-erected in the garden south-east of the castle. The socket-stone on which it stands also came from Kirkapoll. The socket was too large for the shaft but the modern part at the base was designed to fit. This may indicate that the socket-stone and cross did not belong together originally. The cross is thought to date to the second half of the 15th century. On the socket-stone there is an inscription in Lombardic capitals which translates as 'This is the cross of Abbot Finguine and of his sons Finguine and ? Aed'. He was abbot of Iona from about 1357 until 1408 and the stone can be attributed to this period. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
