Description Interior detail of the relief of an urn flanked by two griffons on the fireplace in the dining room on the first floor.

Catalogue Number SC 457649

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of ED 832

Scope and Content Detail of fireplace, first floor drawing room, George Square, Edinburgh The first new residential project in the city outside the confines of the 16th-century Flodden Wall, was designed by James Brown, a far-seeing Edinburgh architect, who built George Square on the southern limits of the old burgh in 1766. This simple wooden surround with a Classical motif in the centre, surrounded by floral swags, is typical of the later manner of Robert Adam (1728-92). Fireplaces were made in marble, wood or stone, and their enrichment with Classical motifs is one of the most characteristic features of late Georgian architectural decoration, influenced by Robert Adam, the chief exponent of such Classical designs.
