Scope and Content Albert Memorial, Charlotte Square Garden, Edinburgh Charlotte Square, designed by Robert Adam in 1791, is one of the most beautiful large residential squares in Europe. In 1803 a circular garden in the middle was levelled, laid out to a plan by William Weir in 1808, and enlarged as an octagon in 1873. In the centre of the garden, is the Albert Memorial, a large bronze equestrian statue by John Steell of Prince Albert in field marshal's uniform. The statue rests on a base of Peterhead granite, almost 5m high, with corner groups of figures. The corner groups of figures represent the Nobility by William Brodie, Science and Learning, and Labour by DW Stevenson, and the Army and Navy by Clark Stanton. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
