Scope and Content St George's Church, Charlotte Square, Edinburgh St George's Church, now West Register House, was built by Robert Reid, 1811-14, after Robert Adam's original design was rejected as being too costly. The church stands on the west side of the square, with a clear view along the length of George Street. The front of the church has large Ionic columns in a recessed portico with flanking pavilions. The tall copper dome is a slim Neo-Classical edition of the dome of St Paul's, London. The present interior is now adapted to document storage on five floors. The two-storeyed entrance has an exhibition room below and research room above, seen through three arched openings in which plate glass has replaced the original huge panelled doors.
