Scope and Content Charlotte Square, Edinburgh Early 19th century view of the west side Charlotte Square, designed by Robert Adam in 1791, the year before he died, is the crowning achievement of his many works of domestic architecture, and one of the most beautiful large residential squares in Europe. The elegant and imposing west side of the square has as its centrepiece the square, heavy St George's Church, designed by Robert Reid, 1811-14, replacing an original but more costly design by Robert Adam. James Craig's original intention was to have a church at both ends of the New Town, the one facing the other down the length of George Street, but only St George's, now public record office, West Register House, was built to that plan.
