It was made wider than its sister streets, Princes Street and Queen Street. At the junction of George Street and Castle Street is the statue of Dr Thomas Chalmers by Sir John Steell in 1878. In bronze, it stands on a red granite plinth. Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847), a Church of Scotland minister, held the Chair of Divinity at Edinburgh in 1828. In 1843 he led 'the Disruption' of the Church over the question of patronage, which, in turn, led to the formation of the Free Church of Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
